The Company
was established in Singapore in 1936 as a sole proprietorship
and was converted to a Limited Liability Company in 1957. It
was established by Mr Ram Nath Kashyap (1895-1986) and had its
first office in Malacca Street. After World War Two, it shifted
to 124-126 Owen Road and remained there till 1982 when it moved
once again to its existing premises at 15 Tagore Drive.
Over the years the Company has done many kinds of businesses.
In the early years it was mainly involved with imports of fruits,
produce, sports goods and genuine leather. After 1946 the business
changed mainly to P.V.C. Plastic Sheeting, P.V.C Leathercloth,
materials and machinery for the manufacture of plastic articles
handbags and luggage. From 1953 to 1969 the Company was a major
supplier of Indian hand woven woollen carpets to the British
Army in Singapore. This business came to a close when the Army
pulled out of Singapore. A wholly owned subsidiary "Carpets
& Furnishings" was established in 1967 with a Showroom at 37
Tanglin Road. The Company started importing and distributing
a wide range of floorcoverings including rugs, broadloom carpets
and accessories.
With offices in Owen Road, a showroom at Tanglin Road and warehouses
in Port of Singapore Authority, there was a genuine need to
consolidate the activities for greater efficiency. Consequently,
the Company purchased the land and built the "United Agencies
Building" at 15 Tagore Drive Singapore which it occupies from
1982 till today.
In 1984 the Company established its first overseas office in
Kuala Lumpur "Alpha Interiors Sdn Bhd" which is still operating
actively and taking care of the Malaysian market.
Currently the Company operates from the "United Agencies Building"
and four other wholly owned warehouses in the same vicinity.
